Ted Hallock Fellowship

The Ted Hallock Fellowship at Sustainable Northwest provides emerging leaders hands-on experience with work that links environmental enhancement and economic opportunity in the rural West.  Each fall, a ten-week fellowship will be awarded to a promising college or graduate-level student to advance programs that help rural communities and enterprises achieve ecological, economic and social resilience and vitality.  (Learn more.) About Ted Hallock

Ted HallockTed Hallock was a passionate defender of Oregon’s natural resources and one of Sustainable Northwest’s founding board members. Propelled by a daunting intelligence and commanding resolve, he set an example for how to get the most out of life: he covered jazz for Downbeat Magazine, flew 30 combat missions in WWII, won a Peabody Award for excellence in radio journalism, and served in the Oregon legislature from 1962 to 1983. Ted was a gifted political strategist and unafraid of challenges: a sign outside his office door read “Windmill Tilter.”

As a state senator and later chair of the Northwest Power Planning Council, Ted was concerned that rural and urban communities were increasingly divided and that economic interests and environmental advocates were increasingly at odds. In the early 1990’s he wrote, “The most profound challenge facing Oregon today is maintaining the vitality of our economy while sustaining the integrity of our natural environment. The benefits of successfully meeting this challenge extend beyond our own borders as other parts of the country and the world look to Oregon for environmental policy leadership.” Ted argued that the linked objectives of environmental enhancement and economic prosperity should serve as the underpinning for all Oregon-based business practices. It was during this tenure on the Northwest Power Planning Council that Ted conceived of the need for a non-governmental organization to promote environmentally responsible, economically sound business practices. Ted’s ideas and energy ultimately led to the creation of Sustainable Northwest.
