Martin Goebel 128

Martin Goebel, Founder and President

Martin Goebel is one of the pioneers of the sustainability movement and a recent recipient of the prestigious Earle A. Chiles Award.  His desire to find solutions that work for communities, businesses and the environment during the timber and salmon wars of the 90’s led him to create Sustainable Northwest in 1994.   Born and raised in Mexico, Martin's conservation career includes leadership positions in The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International and World Wildlife Fund.  He has helped found several organizations including the Mexico Nature Conservation Fund, Wallowa Resources, and Lake County Resources Initiative.  Martin recently completed 10 years as a founding member of the Oregon Sustainability Board and currently serves as a Trustee of the Compton Foundation, Mexico Nature Conservation Fund and the Mesoamerican Reef Fund.  He is frequently asked to publish and speak on themes related to collaborative leadership, conservation and sustainable development policy and practice in the Pacific Northwest and Latin America.  An avid diver and fly fisherman, Martin loves to explore rivers and reefs any chance he gets.

Chad Davis 128.2Chad Davis, Program Director, Forest Stewardship Program

Chad works with Forest Stewardship Program partners and communities to link them to opportunities that strengthen market channels for the byproducts of ecologically-based forest stewardship. Chad's interest in market-based conservation strategies that create opportunity for individuals at the community level drew him to Sustainable Northwest. He also works to affect Federal and state policy, striving to ensure that rural entrepreneurs and leaders have equitable access to developing appropriately scaled renewable energy projects. In his spare time Chad enjoys strapping on his backpack to survey the alpine flora of the Northwest and pedaling past the hopfields and vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley.

Caleb Dean 128Caleb Dean, Communications Associate

Caleb is Sustainable Northwest’s link to the media. He focuses on telling our story and working with our partners to communicate progress on the ground. Caleb received his Bachelors of Science in Environmental Design from the University of Massachusetts. His thesis focused on sustainable tourism development in coastal communities and islands. He also studied International Relations in Copenhagen, Denmark during his final year at UMass. After graduating, Caleb spent four years in his rural hometown in western Massachusetts consulting on economic development and sustainability projects. He also launched, owned, and operated a co-working and incubator business space. Caleb is most passionate about empowering people to build strong, vibrant and lasting communities.

Maia Enzer 128Maia Enzer, Policy Program Director

Maia has expertise in finding and developing policy solutions related forest restoration and community economic development, with a focus on federal lands policy. She is a skilled facilitator with nearly two decades of experience bringing diverse stakeholders together to find common ground around federal land management issues. Maia was drawn to the West Coast by the vast quantity of public forests, and the policy issues related to their management. A frequent speaker and presenter, Maia serves on the Western Governors' Association Forest Health Advisory Council as well as an advisory to the National Rural Assembly. Maia holds a Master's degree from the Yale University School of Forestry in Environmental Studies and a BA in Political Science from Union College in Schenectady, New York.

Dimitra 128Dimitra Giannakoulias, Operations Assistant

Dimitra is responsible for a variety of program and executive support at Sustainable Northwest, including event and travel planning, logistical coordination for meetings and events, and program research. Previously, she worked for the City of Portland as a community outreach and program development specialist, where she managed staff and projects for the City's Grey-to-Green Program. During her tenure there, the city planted thousands of trees on commercial and residential properties throughout Portland. Before moving to Oregon, Dimitra lived in many places, including Greece, Great Britain, Japan, and Australia, working as a teacher, curriculum developer, writer and editor. She gave up her work in education to pursue a dream to work outdoors, and found herself going from the classroom to the mountains of Montana and Wyoming. There, she dug many miles of trail. In her free time, she enjoys backpacking, hiking, camping, climbing, cooking with friends, and going to see cult classics like Mothra at the Laurelhurst Theater.

James Honey 128James Honey, Program Director, Klamath & Rangelands

James was born and raised in Mexico and moved to the United States to study at Stanford University. He graduated with a BA in History, receiving high honors for his research on the environmental history of the Tohono O’odham, a Native American tribe divided across the US-Mexico border. Major coursework included biology, conservation, and Latin American models of economic development. James’ professional background includes conservation (in Mexico, generally, and hydro-relicensing in CA), and litigation (as a complex class action paralegal). Over six years, James has assisted a half dozen community-based organizations and become deeply involved in the search for comprehensive solutions to issues in the Klamath Basin. James is responsible for one of the first “working lands” conservation easements in Oregon, and one of the only in the US held by an Indian tribe. He is a recipient of the John Wesley Powell Award for contributions to Western watershed management for his work on this easement and assisting Basin organizations in the development of ranching-compatible restoration regimes.

Dylan Kruse 128Dylan Kruse, Program Assistant

Dylan provides assistance across multiple programs and issue areas, including policy, forest stewardship, communications, and general administration.  Before joining Sustainable Northwest, he attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR and received a B.A. in International Affairs.  His work at Sustainable Northwest has linked his diverse interests of resource management, conservation, renewable energy production and economic development.

Renee Magyar 128Renee Magyar, Development, Communications, Operations Associate

Renee draws on her creative and logistics background for her behind-the-scenes work at SNW, including planning the annual Gala fundraiser, designing and editing communications, and creating and managing the SNW brand. Before joining Sustainable Northwest, Renee spent three years working in supply operations at McMurdo and Amundsen-Scott South Pole Antarctic research stations, and was a designer at an award-winning graphic design studio in San Francisco. Renee is an artist who works primarily with textiles and recycled materials, and when not exploring the area by bike, she seeks adventure at home and abroad.

Alaina Pomeroy 128Alaina Pomeroy, Program Associate, Policy, Klamath & Rangelands

 

Alaina’s involvement in multiple programs at Sustainable Northwest helps to integrate policy priorities for range and forestlands, and promotes healthy rural communities and leadership for conservation, regardless of land cover. Alaina holds a bachelors degree in Environmental Studies and Spanish from the University of Oregon Clark Honors College. During her senior year she completed an Honors thesis, Science and the Klamath Project, where she researched the role of science across the history of the Klamath issue. Alaina was introduced to the community-based forestry movement as a research assistant at the Ecosystem Workforce Program, Institute for a Sustainable Environment. When not at work, Alaina can be found hiking in the beautiful Northwest with her dog Rudy, or playing Ultimate frisbee.

Kelly Reardon, Finance and Operations Director

When not paying invoices and generating reports, Kelly helps troubleshoot many of Sustainable Northwest's computer software or hardware problems. Before joining Sustainable Northwest, he spent several years in local broadcast communications working as a producer and traffic reporter for local morning radio. A fifth generation Oregonian, Kelly is deeply committed to the scenic, recreational, and economic value of the natural resources and environment in the Northwest.

Patrick Shannon 128Patrick Shannon, Program Associate, Forest Stewardship Program

Patrick has a few roles relating to sustainable forestry at Sustainable Northwest. He is involved with and serves on the board of directors for the Blue Mountains Forest Parnters, a collaborative group in Grant County, Oregon, that works to advance collaborative decision making for the Malheur National Forest. Patrick assists business members in the Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Program in networking with other businesses and in the marketing of their sustainably produced wood products in the Pacific Northwest and he is also the National Coordinator for the Community Forest Business Alliance, a group of community forestry advocates from across the country who promote markets for wood product businesses that are locally based and environmentally and socially driven. He earned his B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota, Duluth and a M.S. in Forest Resources from Oregon State University. In his spare time, Patrick likes to backpack, canoe and shoot birds (with a camera).

Ryan Temple 128Ryan Temple, President, Sustainable Northwest Wood

Ryan is responsible for creating and growing markets for sustainably produced wood products and directing Sustainable Northwest Wood. Specific areas of expertise include marketing, business strategy, financial management, and sustainable economic development. Ryan has a keen awareness of the cultural and historical relationship between humans and the forest works to foster a positive relationship between people and the land in everything that he does.  While Ryan aspires to create a marketplace that recognizes and rewards responsible land stewardship; his greatest aspiration is to raise his two daughters to be as inspirational to others as they are to him.
