Staff Biographies

Martin Goebel -- Founder and President

Martin is one of the pioneers of the sustainability movement. His desire to find solutions that worked for communities, businesses and the environment during the "timber wars" led him to create Sustainable Northwest in 1994. Born and raised in Mexico, Martin's conservation career includes work with The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Mexico Nature Conservation Fund, which he helped found. Martin is a member of the Oregon Sustainability Board and currently serves as a Trustee of the Compton Foundation. He frequently speaks and publishes on the subjects of conservation and sustainable development in the Pacific Northwest and Latin America. An avid fly fisherman, Martin loves to explore the rivers of Oregon any chance he gets.

Cullen Brady -- Policy Program Associate

Cullen grew up in the western United States and has a deep passion for policy and working to find landscape-scale solutions for community-based conservation. After moving to Portland to pursue a double degree in international affairs and German studies (including spending a year in Munich, Germany) from Lewis & Clark College, Cullen served as an intern for Congressman Earl Blumenauer. He then worked for the City Club of Portland creating venues and opportunities for civic engagement at various levels, along with facilitating community-based policy research. He then went to work for The Nature Conservancy in major gift fundraising and then as their policy associate for the Western United States. On the weekends, you will likely find Cullen sipping the most recently released vintage of a Pinot Noir in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

Chad Davis -- Program Director, HFHC Partnership

Chad works with HFHC Partners and communities to link them to opportunities that strengthen market channels for the byproducts of ecologically-based forest stewardship. Chad's interest in market-based conservation strategies that create opportunity for individuals at the community level drew him to Sustainable Northwest. He also works to affect Federal and state policy, striving to ensure that rural entrepreneurs and leaders have equitable access to developing appropriately scaled renewable energy projects. In his spare time Chad enjoys strapping on his backpack to survey the alpine flora of the Northwest and pedaling past the hopfields and vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley.

Maia Enzer -- Policy Program Director

Maia has a particular passion for finding and developing policy solutions related forest restoration and community economic development, with a focus on federal lands policy. She is a skilled facilitator with nearly two decades of experience bringing diverse stakeholders together to find common ground around federal land management issues. Maia was drawn to the West Coast by the vast quantity of public forests, and the policy issues related to their management. A frequent speaker and presenter, Maia serves on the Western Governors' Association Forest Health Advisory Council as well as an advisory to the National Rural Assembly. Maia holds a Master's degree from the Yale University School of Forestry in Environmental Studies and a BA in Political Science from Union College in Schenectedy, New York.

James Honey -- Program Director Klamath Basin and Rangeland Programs

James was born and raised in Mexico and moved to the United States to study at Stanford University.  He graduated with a BA in History, receiving high honors for his research on the environmental history of the Tohono O’odham, a Native American tribe divided across the US-Mexico border.  Major coursework included biology, conservation, and Latin American models of economic development.  James’ professional background includes conservation (in Mexico, generally, and hydro-relicensing in CA), and litigation (as a complex class action paralegal).  Over six years, James has assisted a half dozen community-based organizations and become deeply involved in the search for comprehensive solutions to issues in the Klamath Basin. James is responsible for one of the first “working lands” conservation easements in Oregon, and one of the only in the US held by an Indian tribe.  He is a recipient of the John Wesley Powell Award for contributions to Western watershed management for his work on this easement and assisting Basin organizations in the development of ranching-compatible restoration regimes.

Renee Magyar -- Special Events Coordinator

Renee draws on her creative and logistics background for the multitude of projects she supports at Sustainable Northwest, including redesign and maintenance of the website and database, planning the annual Gala fundraiser, editing communications, and keeping daily operations on track. Before joining Sustainable Northwest, Renee spent three years supporting supply operations at McMurdo and Amundsen-Scott South Pole Antarctic research stations, and cut her graphic design teeth in San Francisco. Renee is an artist who works primarily with textiles and recycled materials, and when not biking the streets of Portland or repairing the foundation of her house, she seeks adventure at home and abroad.

Jed Mitchell -- Senior Director of Operations

Jed works to ensure that wheels keep spinning at Sustainable Northwest and that staff, Board and partners are able to continue their groundbreaking work across the region. Prior to his move to Sustainable Northwest, Jed helped launch and run, the Environmental Solutions Forum, a $4 million initiative to increase the capacity and enhance the effectiveness of 15 San Francisco Bay Area non-profits. A "serial dilettante", Jed has enjoyed dabbling in birding, bluegrass mandolin, squash, backyard gardening, and cooking at various points in his life. His current preoccupation is his son Jack who arrived June 2009.

Alaina Pomeroy -- Program Assistant for Policy, Klamath and Ranches and Rangelands

Alaina Pomeroy was introduced to the community based forestry movement as research assistant at the Ecosystem Workforce Program in Eugene. Her previous work experience includes tutoring for the American English Institute, three weeks in Bulgaria as a research assistant for the INTREU program and landscaper extraordinaire for Pomeroy's Organic Landscape and Design in Portland.   Alaina is a 7th generation Oregonian, born and raised in Portland. She is an avid fan of ultimate frisbee and you may see her running around catching discs in Portland parks.

Patrick Shannon -- HFHC Program Associate

Patrick Shannon assists members in the HFHC partnership in networking with other businesses and in the marketing of their sustainably produced wood products. Patrick is also the National Coordinator for the Community Forest Business Alliance, a group of community forestry advocates from across the country who promote markets for wood product businesses that are locally based and environmentally and socially driven. In this position, Patrick works to document and share successful models of community forestry to enhance their proliferation across the country. In his spare time, Patrick likes to backpack, canoe and shoot birds (with a camera).

Kelly Reardon -- Finance Director

When not paying invoices and generating reports, Kelly helps troubleshoot many of Sustainable Northwest's computer software or hardware problems. Before joining Sustainable Northwest, he spent several years in local broadcast communications working as a producer and traffic reporter for local morning radio. A fifth generation Oregonian, Kelly is deeply committed to the scenic, recreational, and economic value of the natural resources and environment in the Northwest.

Ryan Temple -- President, Sustainable Northwest Wood

Ryan is responsible for creating and growing markets for sustainably produced wood products and directing Sustainable Northwest Wood. Specific areas of expertise include marketing, business strategy, financial management, and sustainable economic development. Ryan has a keen awareness of the cultural and historical relationship between humans and the forest works to foster a positive relationship between people and the land in everything that he does.  While Ryan aspires to create a marketplace that recognizes and rewards responsible land stewardship; his greatest aspiration is to raise his two daughters to be as inspirational to others as they are to him.

“The communities of Lakeview and Paisley would not be engaged in proactive initiatives such as biomass and forest plan participation if it were not for Sustainable Northwest’s early involvement in our processes. We are indebted to SNW for their assistance and continuing partnership.”
