The Partnership of Portland State University and The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.
Portland State University is a leader in sustainability research and education, providing practical solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental, social and economic problems. In September 2008, The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation made a landmark, $25 million challenge grant to Portland State University to support sustainability in higher education. Both the grant and the funds raised to match it must be used exclusively for sustainability programs.
No other university in the United States that has made such a deep commitment to promoting sustainability in its community. The Miller Foundation’s challenge grant is a remarkable commitment, and will support PSU’s aims to be a living laboratory of sustainability, with research and education fully integrated with the surrounding community. Sustainability will not simply be taught as a single course or major, but will be incorporated across an array of disciplinary majors and will engage students, faculty, staff, civic and business leaders, and partners of all stripes – rural and urban.
