The Sustainable Northwest Board of Directors announces that it has selected John Audley as its new Executive Director, effective July 16, 2013. Currently Administrator of Policy, Planning, and Technical Analysis at the Oregon Department of Energy, John will succeed Martin Goebel, who founded the non-profit in 1994.

"The result of an extensive search, with many excellent candidates, was a unanimous decision to offer the position to John." says Jane O'Keeffe, Sustainable Northwest Board Chair. "With his expertise in environment and energy policy, his in-depth experience building consensus among diverse constituencies, and his passion and vision for the work we do, we are confident we found the best person to lead Sustainable Northwest to the next level of success."

Martin Goebel is also very happy with the Board's selection. "As Founder, I am deeply committed to the well-being of the organization and I know that I am leaving Sustainable Northwest in very, very capable hands. I look forward to supporting John Audley, the staff, and board in the next evolutionary stage of this fine organization however I can."

John is a seasoned policy advocate, author, and negotiator. For over fifteen years he worked in Washington, DC and Brussels, Belgium on state, national, and international environmental and economic issues. He gained broad international policy and trade experience through his tenures at the National Wildlife Federation, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he earned the Silver medal for spearheading the formal inclusion of environmental issues into U.S. trade policy and secured congressional support for EPA's role in U.S. trade policy development. He was introduced to the northwest through his responsibilities as government relations liaison for The Nature Conservancy Oregon chapter. From there he served as the Deputy Director of the Renewable Energy Project before joining the Oregon Department of Energy. He has considerable experience working with diverse constituencies on complicated matters in rural and urban communities.

"Sustainable Northwest is one of the most trusted groups working at the intersection of environment, economy, and community. They are clearly a leader in rural sustainability in the Pacific Northwest, and I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to join this valuable and effective organization," says John Audley.

John has testified before Congress, the European Parliament, the World Trade Organization and four state legislatures. He holds a M.A. in International Business Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. in Political Economy from the University of Maryland.

John Audley will be formally introduced to the Sustainable Northwest community at our annual summer event in Portland, Oregon on August 8, 2013. Those interested in attending the event can find more information here
