Hosted by Washington Tourism, a public talk by Dr. John Francis of National Geographic celebrating the release of the Central Cascades Geotourism MapGuide.

John Francis, PhD, Vice President for Research, Conservation and Exploration, National Geographic Society, will unveil the Central Cascades MapGuide, while discussing the benefits of geotourism -- tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents, at a public talk on Thursday, January 21, at 6PM. Hosted by Washington State Tourism, the event will take place in the Microsoft Auditorium, at the Seattle Central Library (1000 4th Avenue).

The new bi-state map highlights over 200 geotourism points of interest, selected from over 1,200 nominations by area residents, in a region stretching from Mt. Rainier to Crater Lake. Printed copies of the map will be available at the talk and can be ordered from www.TheCentralCascades.com beginning on Jan. 19.

The one-hour talk is free, however tickets are required and can be reserved by accessing http://ngsmapguide.eventbrite.com/. As a bonus, the first 50 people to reserve tickets will receive a printed Central Cascades MapGuide at the door.

Dr. Francis oversees the National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations promoting the concept of geotourism and a more holistic view of tourism as a motive force for enhancing values of place. Francis’s professional career is rooted in wildlife biology and a deep commitment to communication of the potent ties between humans and the rest of the natural world. He has fashioned his interests and expertise into successful turns as a scientist, wildlife filmmaker, and current leader of the Society’s storied research and exploration arm.
