Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Makes International Connections in UK

HFHC garners international attention in Edinburgh, Scotland as a participant in the Forest Connect network.

When the Ford Foundation was asked for a domestic example of market connections that support community forestry, they suggested Sustainable Northwest. As a result, HFHC Director Ryan Temple recently represented the U.S. at a three day workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland hosted by Forest Connect.

The gathering brought together an international group of practitioners who are improving market access for forest products producers. Ryan shared his experience with the Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Partnership as a model for how international efforts might organize to increase regional market opportunities.

While there are distinct differences between community forestry in the U.S. and developing nations, the group found that challenges of accessing resources, markets, and policy assistance transcend borders.

“Sustainable Northwest’s programs and staff have been an inspiration and catalyst to my work here in Central Oregon. Without their wise guidance and capable technical assistance, we might still have something to work with, but it wouldn’t have actualized to the robust, savvy program that it now is.”

Scott Aycock
Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council
