As stewardship projects evolve from the pilot phase into working economic models, it is appropriate to consider new finance mechanisms that will allow for more rapid diffusion of models and implementation across a range of scales. Mission based businesses may be able to access creative debt financing with unique terms and services. Panelists will explain some of these options and discuss the requirements and expectations that may accompany them.

Doug Cooper
Douglas Cooper is the Assistant Director of Mercy Corps Northwest. He was hired in July 2005 to manage MCNW’s business development services. Prior to being hired as staff, Mr. Cooper worked under contract with MCNW to develop its On-Line Entrepreneur Center. From 1989 to 2003, Mr. Cooper was President and owner of Menagerie Works, a design and manufacturing company. He received a BA in Philosophy and Fine Arts from University of California, Berkeley in 1980.
Adam Zimmerman
ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia (SBEC) is a nonprofit community development organization serving the rural and urban communities in Oregon and Washington. Founded in 1995, SBEC has offices in Ilwaco, Port Angeles, Shelton, Seattle, Portland, Astoria and Coos Bay. SBEC focuses on building stronger regional economies by recognizing the interdependence of economic, environmental and community health. We provide capital investment, risk management services and consulting services. Our investment products include a revolving loan fund, federal tax credits, and a product innovation fund. Adam Zimmerman manages SBEC’s consulting services business line from the Portland office. He works closely with a wide variety of non-profit organizations and conservation entrepreneurs throughout the Northwest, providing capacity building, business planning and real-estate pre-development assistance. Adam is an eastern Oregon native, has a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon. He is a former member of the Coos County Fair Board and currently serves on the board of Oregon Tilth.
Jed Mitchell
Jed Mitchell is the senior director of operations at Sustainable Northwest. Before his move to the Northwest, Jed served as a program manager for the Center for Venture Philanthropy, a division of Peninsula Community Foundation. In this role, Jed helped launch and run, the Environmental Solutions Forum, a $4 million initiative to increase the capacity and enhance the effectiveness of 15 San Francisco Bay Area non-profits. Jed developed a keen interest in matching the interest of "donor-investors" with effective, high-performing non-profits, and in strategies that advance the impact of philanthropy. Prior to this work, Jed was the Associate Director for Stanford Sierra Programs and responsible for oversight 75-staff, $20 million non-profit educational facility and resort located in Lake Tahoe, California.
