Give. Guide. Grow.

Your Support. Your Cause.

Donate via a Donor-Advised Fund to Sustainable Northwest

Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are a simple and flexible way to support our work in rural and Tribal communities across the Northwest. A DAF is a charitable giving account established at a sponsoring organization. Donors contribute assets to the fund, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants to nonprofits like SNW over time.

Think of a DAF as a charitable savings account. Your contribution can be invested and grow tax-free, but can only be used to support the causes that you choose.

Types of DAFs

One contribution. Immediate tax deduction. With flexibility to give over time to organizations you support.

“It will be the people who lead us to sustainability.”

— Dick Roy, Northwest Earth Institute ~ Founder of a New Northwest

 FAQs

    • You’ll gain flexibility and simplicity by contributing to one fund that allows you to support multiple organizations on your schedule.

    • Funds can be invested and possibly grow in your account potentially increasing your donations.

    • DAFs offer support for complex gifts by accepting a wide range of assets like stocks, real estate, or non-cash assets that nonprofits are not equipped to accept.

  • We aren’t tax professionals, so check with your advisor but some possible advantages are:

    • You receive a tax deduction in the year your contribution is made to the DAF, for the full amount of your gift, not as it’s distributed.

    • You can donate appreciated assets (like stock) to a DAF and possibly avoid capital gains tax.

    • DAF funds can be invested and grow tax-free, potentially increasing the total amount available for charitable giving over time.

  • There is no cost to you to contribute via a DAF. Using the Easy DAF button above costs Sustainable Northwest 1.5% of your contribution. Visit your DAF page directly to help us avoid this surcharge.

  • Yes. Your tax receipt will be issued by your DAF sponsor for the full amount of the contribution at the time of the gift. Sustainable Northwest will not issue a tax receipt for gifts received from DAFs.

  • You will receive a tax-receipt for the full amount of your contribution from your DAF sponsor. Your funds will remain in your account until you direct the funds. When you designate a grant be directed to Sustainable Northwest, the funds will be disbursed by the DAF. Unless you direct the DAF that you’d like to remain anonymous, Sustainable Northwest will be alerted of your gift. We will always follow up with a note or email to let our donors know that the funds were received. If for some reason you don’t hear from us, please contact us!
